Holly Mei Jones - Long Distance Triathlete & Rawvelo Ambassador

Introducing our latest Rawvelo ambassador, long distance triathlete Holly Mei Jones. Having only just started her swim, bike, run career, Holly Mei has quickly made her mark despite ‘never intending to do more than one or two’, with a busy season of racing ahead of her in 2022 including a European championships and a World Championships qualifier.

Already following a plant-based diet and having discovered Rawvelo as her go-to nutrition for training and racing to avoid GI issues, Holly Mei has an exciting year ahead - we spoke to her about her journey so far.

I first got into triathlon in 2019 as a way of getting fit again following a knee injury but soon caught the bug and signed up for a 70.3 in 2020 … which was cancelled during the pandemic. I managed to get a last minute slot for a middle distance race in the Cotswolds in September that year when things started to open up again. And I loved every minute of it!

Safe to say the race went better than expected as I smashed my estimated time by over 30 minutes and won my age group. This qualified me for the European Championships in 2021. Unfortunately, the AG GB team couldn't go to the European Champs in 2021, so all being well I'll be going this year, in September.

Despite the disappointment I still had a successful 2021, my first full season, finishing second in the England Triathlon National Middle Distance Champs alongside multiple AG wins and overall podiums during the year.

My downfall has always been my nutrition though and at Weymouth 70.3 in particular I really struggled with my worst GI issues. I could hardly take on any nutrition during the race, which now looking back was due to the choice of energy gels and drinks that I was taking. I knew I needed to change things to be able to get the most out of myself and started looking for alternative nutrition options before finding Rawvelo.

I tried the gels first during a hard training session and they tasted great and I didn’t have any stomach issues - and haven’t suffered since. I’ve since tried much of the range in training and racing, with both the Peanut Butter and the Chocolate Walnut Brownie bars my faves. In terms of gels I like each of the flavours but save using caffeine gels for race day only.

Welcoming an athlete who already understands and profits from the benefits of the organic, plant-based Rawvelo range is very rewarding and through our collaboration we’re looking to support Holly Mei in what is set to be her most exciting season to date.
